What this tool does

This calculator compares gross earnings from two routes into skilled work across a period you set. The degree path earns its salary for the comparison period minus the years spent studying, and the total study cost is deducted. The apprenticeship path earns its salary across the whole period, less any cost. The result is the difference between those two totals. Because the degree path gives up several years of income before it starts, the head start on the other side is large: at the default figures, four years of study forgoes 200,000 of earnings and adds 60,000 of cost, so an apprentice on 41,500 matches a graduate on 50,000 over 30 years. Two Paths to Skilled Careers

Two routes into a skilled career differ less in what they earn than in when they start earning. A degree defers income for several years and charges for the privilege. An apprenticeship pays from the first week at a lower rate. Whether the higher salary later outruns the head start earlier is an arithmetic question with a specific answer for any pair of figures.

The head start is larger than it looks. At the defaults, four years of study forgoes 200,000 of the graduate salary and adds 60,000 of cost, so the apprentice begins the comparison 260,000 ahead before a single salary difference has been counted.

Which is why the break-even is not where intuition puts it. Over 30 years, an apprentice on 41,500 matches a graduate on 50,000. That is 83% of the graduate salary, not something far below it. Run it the other way and a graduate needs 36,731 to match an apprentice on 30,000.

Realistic Comparison Inputs

Figures for this comparison come from the specific field and the specific country, and every general band published anywhere goes stale. What travels is the method rather than the numbers.

For the degree path, total cost means tuition across all years plus whatever living costs are not covered by earnings or family support, since the model treats study years as years without salary. Where the cost is met by a loan rather than cash, the interest is a real addition the calculator does not see.

For the apprenticeship, cost is usually small or nil, because training is typically employer or state funded, though tools and certification fees can apply in some trades. Salary is the harder input, and the honest figure is not the training wage: the model applies whatever is entered across the entire comparison period, so a figure representing the rate after qualification will overstate the early years, and the training wage will understate the later ones. A weighted average across the period is closer than either.

Worked Example for Career Choice

At the defaults: university cost 60,000, four years of study, a starting salary of 50,000; apprenticeship cost 5,000, apprenticeship salary 30,000; comparison period 30 years.

The degree earns for 26 of the 30 years, so 50,000 times 26 is 1,300,000, less 60,000 of cost, giving 1,240,000. The apprenticeship earns for all 30 years, so 30,000 times 30 is 900,000, less 5,000 of cost, giving 895,000. University comes out 345,000 ahead.

That gap is roughly 11,500 a year across the period, and it moves fast. Lift the apprentice to 41,500 and the two paths are level. Drop the graduate salary to 36,731 and they are level again from the other direction. Neither adjustment is large in absolute terms, which is the point: the answer is decided by a salary difference of a few thousand rather than by anything structural about the two routes.

What the Calculator Does Not Model

Salary growth is the largest omission. Both figures are held flat for the whole period, so neither path gets a raise, a promotion or a move to a different employer. Where the two routes have different growth shapes, and they usually do, holding both flat does not cancel out; it simply removes the thing being compared.

Nothing is discounted either, and over 30 years that matters more than it looks. The apprentice's earnings arrive earlier, so they are worth more in present-value terms than the same total arriving later. Applying a 3% real discount rate to the default figures cuts the university advantage from 345,000 to about 157,000, without changing which path wins.

The apprenticeship years input does not currently enter the calculation. The model applies the apprenticeship salary across the whole comparison period regardless of what that field is set to, so changing it leaves the result unmoved. The training period is instead handled through the salary figure entered, which is why a weighted average works better there than a post-qualification rate.

Also absent: loan interest on the degree cost, the timing of repayments against early-career cashflow, differences in career flexibility between the two routes, and every non-financial consideration from working conditions to how a person prefers to spend a day.

When Each Path Wins Financially

The financial answer reduces to one comparison, which the break-even makes concrete. The degree wins where the salary it unlocks, applied across the shorter working period, clears both the study cost and the earnings given up during study. The apprenticeship wins where its salary comes close enough to the graduate figure that the extra earning years and the avoided cost carry it.

That framing replaces the usual list of fields with something checkable. A route is worth entering into the calculator with its own numbers rather than assumed from a category, because within any field the range between employers and regions is wide enough to swamp the difference between the routes.

Some fields settle the question before the arithmetic starts. Regulated professions with a mandatory degree requirement, medicine and law among them, have no apprenticeship path to compare against, so the calculation only has one side. Elsewhere both routes lead to the same job titles, and the comparison is genuinely open.

Two bodies publish work that beats any general table. The International Labour Organization maintains guidance and standards on quality apprenticeships, including a 2023 Recommendation covering regulation, apprentice rights and social dialogue, which is a reasonable place to understand what a well-structured apprenticeship should include before assuming a salary figure for one. The degree route earns its salary for the comparison period minus the years spent studying, since study years are treated as years without income, and the total study cost is then subtracted. The apprenticeship route earns its salary for every year of the comparison period, with any apprenticeship cost subtracted. The primary result is the absolute difference between the two totals, labelled with whichever route produces more. Both salary figures are held constant across the whole period, so no progression, promotion or employer change is represented on either side; this is the model's largest simplification, and it does not cancel between the routes because their growth profiles typically differ.
